French army kills senior al-Qaeda official in Mali

The death of Yahia Djouadi, a senior historical official of Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb was announced on Monday, March 7, 2022, by the French Ministry of the Armed Forces. It was neutralized during a ground operation by Barkhane's French forces in northern Mali.

It is an operation that was carried out on the night of February 25 to 26, 2022 by soldiers from Barkhane about 100 km north of Timbuktu, Mali. This operation made it possible to neutralize the jihadist. "After locating him in an area known to be a refuge for groups belonging to AQIM and JNIM, and then formally identified, he was neutralized by a ground intervention, supported by a Tiger reconnaissance and attack helicopter and two French drones," the Statement from the Ministry of the Armed Forces said.
Ammunition was destroyed and weaponry was seized during the reconnaissance of the area following the operation. This elimination also makes it possible "to weaken once again the Qaedist governance and deprives the GSIM led by Iyad ag Ghali of a major relay in the north of Mali and in the Timbuktu area in particular", stress the French armies.

Militarily present since 2013 in Mali, France has given itself six months to withdraw its forces from the country, while continuing the targeted hunt for the main jihadist leaders. Despite tactical victories in Mali, the ground has never really been taken back by the state.
