Russia has fired a total of 600 missiles since the beginning of its invasion of Ukraine and about 95 percent of its combat power is now in the country, a senior U.S. defense official was quoted as saying by CNN on Sunday.
The United States closely followed the fighting in Kherson and Mykolaiv on Sunday and Russian forces are still trying to encircle Kiev, Khakhiv, Chernihiv and Mariupol, according to the official.
But these advances were hampered by strong Ukrainian resistance, slowing down the Russian assault.
Meanwhile, the imposing Russian convoy north of Kiev, which stretches some 40 miles of road, remains blocked, but there is no update on the distance between it and Kiev. At the end of last week, it was about 25 kilometers from the center of the city of Kiev.
The skies over Kiev remain disputed, and the Ukrainians and Russians retain a significant majority of their air combat power.
"We believe that the Ukrainian people, in most parts of the country, still have means of communication, access to the Internet and the media," the official added.
