Pope Francis strips Rwandan priest of his priesthood"
Pope Francis has stripped a Rwandan-born priest who has served as a priest in northern France for almost three decades of his priesthood.
A statement circulating online and signed by the Bishop of Évreux says that Wenceslas Munyeshyaka, 64, "loses directly his priestly rights" and is "prohibited" from serving "anywhere" as a priest.
The Diocese of Evreux confirmed the authenticity of the statement to the BBC, which says that it is based on the Pope's order of March.
Mr. Munyeshyaka, who fled to France after the Rwandan genocide in 1994, has not commented on the decision.
He was suspended by the Diocese of Evreux in December 2021 after he legally admitted to being the father of a 10-year-old boy.
Mr. Munyeshyaka was ordained as a priest in Rwanda in 1992, where he is accused of involvement in the killing of hundreds of Tutsis who had taken refuge in his church in the capital Kigali during the genocide.
French courts have acquitted him of charges of genocide.
